Google and Sanofi announced yesterday a collaboration to establish a virtual innovation lab to transform the delivery of medicines and health services through data technologies.

“Combining Sanofi’s biologic innovations and scientific data with Google’s industry-leading capabilities, from cloud computing to state-of-the-art artificial intelligence, we aspire to give people more control over their health and accelerate the discovery of new therapies,” said Ameet Nathwani, M.D., chief digital officer, chief medical officer and executive vice president of medical at Sanofi.

Sanofi, a biopharmaceutical company focused on human health, has three key objectives to change how it develops new treatments:
  1. To better understand patients and diseases
  2. To increase its operational efficiency
  3. To improve the experience of its patients and customers
The organizations will leverage deep analytics to understand key diseases and extract patient insights. Technology and analytics will be used on Sanofi’s real-world database to better understand which treatments work for patients. This could improve the ability to offer personalized treatment advice and optimize patient care while reducing healthcare costs.

Google and Sanofi will also apply artificial intelligence to datasets to forecast sales and inform marketing and supply chain efforts.

Sanofi’s information technology team will begin using the Google Cloud Platform. According to the announcement, leveraging automation, scalability and agility could accelerate and simplify Sanofi’s legacy management and provide easy access to recent technologies.

“Life sciences companies are looking to data driven, digital innovation to help fuel the creation of accessible healthcare solutions,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. “We look forward to collaborating with Sanofi to help accelerate the cycle of healthcare innovation to populations throughout the world.”
