Karantis360 has worked with IBM Watson to build a new assisted living solution that uses sensors and IBM’s artificial intelligence (AI) running on the cloud to enable people who need assistance to live more independently, according to an announcement.

The cloud-based system uses Internet of Things technologies to collect near real-time data about the movements and day-to-day activities of people in care. The system can be installed in homes, sheltered housing, residential care or healthcare facilities and was designed to monitor at-risk older or vulnerable individuals.

The solution uses IBM Watson analytics and machine learning capabilities to identify and learn an individual’s behavior. The sensors track movement around the home and monitors temperature, humidity and other measurements dependent on individual needs.

Over time, the system learns the routines and can detect behaviors that do not fit with normal patterns. If an unusual pattern is detected — or an incident that could require emergency attention — the system will send out an alert through the Karantis360 mobile app.

The system can also identify if a person falls, leaves the house at an unusual time of day, gets out of bed or uses the bathroom.

“By working with IBM, we have been able to develop a digital solution that could completely revolutionize the way we care for our loved ones, reducing the burden of care and helping vulnerable and older people to live in their own homes for longer,” said Nick Hampson, managing director of Karantis360.
