Mount Sinai and Hasso Plattner Institute Launch Digital Health Institute

The Mount Sinai Health System and the Hasso Plattner Institute today announced the launch of a new institute for digital health that will bring together industry leaders to develop products that could empower patients and providers and improve health outcomes.

The Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai will be open to experts in healthcare delivery, health sciences, biomedical and digital engineering, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to rapidly develop digital health products with real-time predictive and preventive capabilities.

“This endeavor will usher in a new era of digital health at Mount Sinai that advances the field of precision medicine,” said Dennis S. Charney, M.D., president for academic affairs at Mount Sinai Health System.

Patient-engaged and data driven research will be conducted at the institute.

Long-term goals of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health include establishing a framework in which researchers collaborate across healthcare and digital engineering, extending funding opportunities for researchers in the U.S. and abroad and researching and testing prototype digital health solutions for consumers, patients, providers and health systems.

Mount Sinai provides a foundation for the institute, with expertise in genomics, big data, supercomputing and bioinformatics, along with a large and diverse patient population and the ability to translate from the lab directly to the clinic.

The new institute further displays the desire of Mount Sinai and the Hasso Plattner Institute to transform healthcare.

Recently, Hasso Plattner Institute established Digital Health Center that brings together individuals with science and engineering backgrounds to improve health and wellbeing. And Mount Sinai’s Institute for Next Generation Healthcare has developed an integrated translational biomedical research model using omics, clinical medicine, digital health and AI. Next Generation’s Lab 100 leverages data and technology to redesign how health is measured and care is delivered.

The Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai will be co-led by Joel Dudley, Ph.D., director of Mount Sinai’s Institute for Next Generation Healthcare, and Erwin P. Bottinger, professor of digital health-personalized medicine at the Hasso Plattner Institute and Universität Potsdam in Germany.

The Hasso Plattner Foundation gifted $15 million to establish the new institute.

Collaborations with HPS Gesundheitscloud gGmbH, a non-profit funded by the Hasso Plattner Institute, and Smart4Health, a European Union-funded research consortium, could strengthen the Institution’s ability to fulfill its goals.

“By leveraging our shared knowledge and academic excellence, Mount Sinai and (Hasso Plattner Institute) are positioned to find solutions that will revolutionize healthcare and science and improve health nationally and globally,” Charney said.
