Podcast: A New Kind of Warfare

JUNE 01, 2018

WannaCry. NotPetya. You’ve undoubtedly heard of these ransomware attacks and the chaos they sowed almost exactly a year ago. But what are the lasting effects of these incidents? And did they bring in a new age of global cyberwarfare?

To answer these questions, I tapped our assistant editor, Ryan Black, to embark on a long and challenging reporting trip. After several months, he filed a piece that will be the cover story for the upcoming June issue of Healthcare Analytics News™. And today on Data Book, we explore the very same questions, retracing the steps taken by WannaCry and NotPetya and exploring how healthcare can protect itself from the cyberwarfare threat.

Let me be clear: This magazine has covered the hell out of WannaCry and NotPetya from the time each story broke. We’ve reviewed them in year-end roundups and turned back to the attacks time and again when we noticed an appropriate link or another chance to unearth valuable lessons. But our upcoming cover story is different.

Indeed, the June centerpiece of this magazine includes never-before-reported details. It’s built on a narrative that few, if any, have heard, aside from those who work for affected companies. And the story ties all this information together to give healthcare—and everyone else—an idea of what we’re up against.

So, enjoy this episode of Data Book, but view it as a sort of appetizer, a taste of what’s to come in our June feature.

If you’re down with Data Book, please subscribe, rate, and review us on iTunesGoogle PlaySpotify, or just about any podcasting app. We’d also love it if you told a friend about us. Finally, if you use a great healthcare app that no one has heard of, let us know via TwitterFacebook, or LinkedIn. We’ll write it about it in the next issue of our magazine.
