Giving the EHR the Necessary Health Data

Video

The systems need to be fully informed to help doctors best serve patients at the point of care.

As many health systems are looking to adopt a value-based care model, the electronic health record (EHR) plays a large role in the success of the approach.

Rusty Frantz, president and CEO of NextGen Healthcare — a company that develops and sells EHR software and practice management systems to the healthcare industry — spoke with Inside Digital Health™ about value-based care, EHRs and interoperability at HIMSS this year.

According to Frantz, the EHR workflow in the value-based care approach just needs to be better informed of the things the physician is proactively doing for the patient. In order for the patient to have the best outcomes, the physician needs to know everything about the patient, or they might make the wrong decisions at the point of care.

If an EHR has all of that information, it can be profitable for health systems.

By achieving interoperability between EHR systems within a healthcare organization and even between different hospitals, EHRs could be more informed.

Frantz said that while we are starting to see more seamless interactions and trading of data back and forth, the next constraint to interoperability is achieving information accuracy and actionability.

Interoperability is starting to generate value, but there is still a long way to go for more critical and complex use cases in healthcare.
